Overview

Álvaro Mutis Jaramillo (Bogotá, August 25, 1923-Mexico City, September 22, 2013) was a Colombian novelist and poet. He lived in Mexico from his youth until his death. He is considered one of the most important contemporary Hispanic American writers. Throughout his literary career he received, among others, the Xavier Villaurrutia Award in 1988, the Prince of Asturias Award for Literature in 1997, the Queen Sofia Award for Ibero-American Poetry in 1997, the Cervantes Award in 2001 and the Neustadt International Prize for Literature in 2002.
