Eleftheria Deko

Overview

Eleftheria Deko (Ελευθερία Ντεκώ), a lighting designer since 1990, has designed lighting for more than 450 performances for theater, music and dance, opera and visual art installations, for which she has received excellent reviews, distinctions and awards. Among other things, she was awarded the title of “Female Artist of the Year 2009” for her contribution to theater and the arts in general. After 5 years in New York, where she simultaneously worked as a lighting designer and taught Lighting Design at New York University (NYU), she returned to Greece in 1992. Since then, she has collaborated with most Greek theater groups and troupes, directors, set designers, artists, and has been repeatedly invited to design the lighting for performances at international festivals. In 1997, she founded the commercial company "Lights International", specializing in lighting design (stage and events), the design and supply of lighting equipment and the installation of theatrical stages and conference rooms. In 2000, Eleftheria Deco created a department exclusively for architectural lighting, initially highlighting building facades, but very soon she undertook the design and study of the entire spectrum of architectural lighting. Since then, the company has collaborated on numerous architectural projects involving commercial, public and private spaces. Eleftheria Deko is an Assistant Professor at the School of Fine Arts of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, where she has been teaching “Theatrical Lighting” since 2005. A significant moment in her career was her participation in the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, as Lighting Director and Designer for the opening and closing ceremonies. In September 2005, at the 57th Academy of Television Arts and Sciences ceremony, she was awarded the Emmy Award in the Outstanding Lighting Direction category for the Opening Ceremony of the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. Eleftheria Deko is an Assistant Professor at the School of Fine Arts of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, where she has been teaching "Theatrical Lighting" since 2005.
