Black Monk

TV adaptation of A. Chekhov's short story. The main character, Professor Kovrin, is a man full of doubts about the meaning of his existence, yearning for perfection and all-round harmony. Dedicated to his work and his pedagogical mission, he is tormented by anxieties over his own mediocrity and routine. At the same time, he fears that any excellence means the beginning of abnormality, exclusion from society. The mysterious aura of the ancient Christian legend of the Black Monk's existence brings a welcome partner into Kovrin's fractured world, a reflection of his secret desires. Eventually Kovrin comes to believe in his unique destiny to be the chosen one and to do good. In a sudden euphoria, he unthinkingly marries Tanya, a simple country girl. However, the "good" deed eventually becomes a burden for Kovrin...
