Milk Brothers

At a time, the Foundouk of breastfeeding in Fez represented a symbol of female solidarity. New mothers who could not breastfeed, were assisted by other women who volunteered to breastfeed newborns or abandoned children. At the entrance, a man of law wrote in a register the names of the children who fed from the same breast, the latter were considered in the eyes of law as milk brothers and sisters. Meriem, a young single mother, is entrusted with Karam, an orphan abandoned at the Foundouk. Under the eyes of her own son, the young mother develops a maternal love and instinct for this child. Driven by this bond of milk, Meriem offers the director of the Foundouk to take care of this child and raise him alongside her biological son, Ghali. She is refused this request in view of society’s perception of single mothers. Remaining dignified and proud, Meriem will do everything to preserve this unique bond connecting them to Karam.
