Hiroshi was popular with the girls at school. The reason for this, according to Hiroshi himself, is that his "transparent kindness" is effective. In other words, it was all a calculation. Matenro steals Hiroshi's "kindness". Hiroshi loses his "kindness" and suffers. What's more, Matenro orders Senkichi to take away her family's jewels as a condition for returning his kindness.
