Each believing the other to be dead, the young man and the girl set off on separate paths. He believes that rank and power are all he needs to protect those he loves, and she cuts herself off from the world to protect herself. As the years pass, though, power begins to corrupt the young man, and he loses sight of why he sought it in the first place. The only thing left in his once-earnest heart is the image of the girl he so loved. Their paths will cross again in time, though it will be anything but a happy reunion.

And thus the two tales will converge, and past will become prologue.
